For centuries a well-guarded secret, nestled amongst the Yemeni deserts and valleys of southern Arabia lies Tarim, a small town offering little to those pursuing worldly gains. Dr Julian Day

CREATOR AND FOUNDER OF SYSTEMIC STAIRWAY

I read your wonderful book while I was on holiday in Switzerland and I am in awe of your quest for knowledge and sacred truth. Your journey provides enormous food for thought and opens my eyes to another world I knew little about. Given my background in adult learning, I found the learning process especially thought-provoking. My work has been heavily influenced by the philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein who believes “the world we live in is the words we use”. It is brave to challenge conventional wisdom and accepted practices, so I applaud you for rethinking something that doesn’t really work in your community, namely, the teaching of Arabic. If babies can learn the language, then why can’t adults? This is the question that you answer so elegantly that I tried it for myself while I was in Switzerland recently. I began the process of learning French like a baby, not worrying about grammar and soon built up a small vocabulary relevant to situations I encountered in the French part of Switzerland. You and Wittgenstein are right, it’s all about what we mean rather than how we say it. Your journey to Tarim was brave and inspiring, and so are your thoughts on learning language.
